Unplug and Breathe with Megha Dadarwal

“Dentistry can be tough , Yes . I am not kidding .We are at college from 9am-5pm and after that, between doing practical work and meeting submission deadlines ,you are exhausted ! It leaves us with very little time for ourselves so we have hardly ever thought of using that little time for self care . I have always had a lean body type , so I never really felt the need to workout . But once introduced to yoga , I realized , that being healthy was way more than just about being ‘skinny’ . “

Megha Dadarwal is a fourth year student at Dr. HSJ Institute of Dental Science , Panjab University . This, and an Ardent Yogi . She has been conducting yoga classes in Girls Hostel 8 since almost 5 months now . Her classes are free of cost and open for everybody .

“So I started learning yoga about 2 years ago from the Govt college of yoga Sec 23. A year into practicing , I started loving it as it is such a beautiful and complete form of work out  . I almost felt addicted to yoga . Honestly , I would keep practicing different Aasans even as I was talking to my friends late at night .”

Turns out she was surprisingly good at it. Her yoga trainer motivated her to learn more and soon she had started taking classes in college itself  .Apart from that she also took private classes for 2 months in sector 24. She now takes classes at the Girls Hostel

“Why I started teaching in the hostel was because firstly I love yoga and I wanted to share this love with everybody . It has really strengthened me physically and mentally . And I believe everybody should have a chance to benefit from it . Secondly , after slagging all day in college  it takes a lot of willpower to get out of bed and actually drive to some place to workout . So I thought I  could make it convenient for the girls by having classes at their ‘home’ . Here they are more comfortable and the environment is very warm and friendly since we all know each other .Third , I would do it everyday by myself and to do it in a group is always more motivating and exciting . And you know , good energy is contagious .

Megha hopes that this is able to provide the girls with a chance to cut off from technology and the outside world for an hour and devote this time for their well being . As she says ‘ There’s nothing more important that good health . That’s our principle asset

“Why I chose yoga over other forms of working out is because it’s a form of art that keeps you physically , physiologically and psychologically  fit. It’s not as demanding as other forms of workout . Moreover , yoga is for everybody , It doesn’t matter weather you are 17 or 70 . It’s a way of life .”

Just like its quoted in the Bhagwad Gita,” Yoga is a journey of the self ,through the self , to the self !”

“Yoga is all about energy to me . With positive energy and good vibes, nothing seems unachievable. It makes you enthusiastic about every little thing in life  and I believe that’s something  everybody deserves to feel. And honestly who would want to have it any other way . Yoga is more than just plain workout , it’s food for soul !”

Meghas class consists of about 20-25 girls from Girls Hostel 8 and 9 . She takes classes 5 days a week in the common room  between 5.30-6.30 followed by 20 mins of extra practice for those who are facing any problems or want to try advanced poses .

“We try to do something different everyday . I prefer starting the week with mild , less tiring Aasans, shifting to more vigorous exercises as the week progresses . We try to have a split routine and focus on different parts of the body on different days . I make it a point to include atleast 10-15 minutes of breathing exercises and meditation . It’s a great way to unwind and relax .”

hands up

She plans practicing dentistry when it comes to her career but would like to continue teaching yoga.

“Yoga is my love and I want to do it for the rest of my life  , master it  and always promote it .Who knows , maybe I’ll build myself a fancy yoga studio someday ! Haha , that would be amazing . I won’t lie  , I have planned the decor already *laughs* Lets see where life takes me !”
