The Punjab University (PU) has excelled in the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2018. The rankings released this February have put the PU at top position in History, Geography, Arts, Performing Arts and Design, and Medicine and Dentistry across India.
- Plethora of Courses and Excellent Faculty
With 75 functioning departments, the varsity has a whole lot of courses to choose from. Besides the usual UG and PG courses, PU has a number of Vocational Courses as well as Diploma and Certificate courses. There are Diploma courses in several foreign languages including Russian, Mandarin, French, German and so on. Simply a lot of options for self development and to enhance your CV at the same time. Panjab University has a great deal of opportunity for the sport lovers and the fitness freaks as well. The University has playgrounds, a gymnasium and a swimming pool for its sports activities. The Directorate of Sports organises about 70 Inter-College and four to five Inter-University Competitions every year and arranges training camps in these games under the supervision of expert coaches.
There are 18 hostels in the campus – 8 for boys and 10 for women including the recently inaugurated NeerjaBhanot Hall. The hostels have a gym, a common room, a canteen, a visitor’s lounge and lush green lawns inside their premises. The food served in the hostels makes you forget all the terrible hostel food tales you’ve ever heard. It is tasty, hygienic and pocket friendly.

The main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25, the teaching area with the Central Library, Fine Arts Museum, and three-winged structure of the Gandhi Bhawan forming its core; the sports complex, the health centre, and the shopping centre in the middle; university hostel and residential area in the south-east, stretching into the adjacent sector 25 which also houses the University Institute of Engineering As a self sustained township the campus has its own post-office, a branch of SBI, several ATMs, restaurants, eateries and whatnot. The campus designed by French Architecture Le Carbousier is nothing less than a work of art.

With a rose garden, a botanical garden and several other lawns to hangout with friends or to sit in solitude, the campus is lush green. All the sidewalks are lined with shady trees. PU campus has e-rickshaws running through out the campus. Besides its own eco-friendly system of transportation, the University has been declared a no vehicle zone. Cycling is quite popular here. We can easily see students and even faculty members cycling in the campus. No honking cars, no pollution and no congestion on roads- isn’t that amazing?
PU does not top the list just in studies and sports, it is one of the liveliest campuses in India. Fests are organised by various departments round the year-Jhankaar, Soch, Vimarsh, Rose Festival, Euphoria- to name a few. The best of all is the Panjab University Youth Festival which is one of the biggest Youth Festivals in North India.
- StudentCentre aka Stu-C
One of the most popular spots in Chandigarh, a term that is used in Punjabi songs as often as almost every time, StuC. Offering sumptuous foods at affordable rates amidst a scenic beauty, it is one of the major reasons which make Panjab University a favourite hangout spot for students from other universities as well.
Placements are very good in Panjab University, especially for engineering departments. Companies like Deloitte, Infosys, Jugnoo, Merchant Navy, Nestle etc. Come and hire students with the package of up to 12 lakh per annum. Frequent placement drives are conducted by other departments as well.

All festivals- be it Holi or Diwali, Valentines Day or Christmas- are celebrated with equal fervour. There is chance to feel homesick on festivals. Life itself is no less than a celebration at Panjab University.

The entire library is centrally air conditioned with a reading hall that is open 24×7.A great place for pulling all-nighters before exams and the best place to study in the summer afternoons when the heat induce nothing but drowsiness.
A note for night owls: A tea shack near A.C. JOSHI serves amazing chai all night.
- Food, Food, more Food
Are you a big time foodie? Panjab University is the place to turn to.Besides a number of eateries at Stu-C we have an outlet of Indian Coffee House and a Nescafe in the campus Rajma chawal at Stu-C is lip smacking good. We can get all kind of juices, shakes, sandwiches, burgers, parantha and thalis here. Night Food Street aka NFS which lies near Gate no. 1 is an all time adda for the students of Panjab University. It serves delicious food round the clock. Be it a mid night craving for Maggie or an early morning hungerfor chai and Paranthas- NFS is there. 15 sector which is adjoining to the campus has an amazing Chinese food market as well.
