On August 19, 2017, the biotechnology department of Post Graduate Government College, Sector-11 witnessed the beginning of a new club called The Black Iron Club in an intra-department interactive seminar, held by the founder of the club. The Black Iron Club is an open-for-all student-club which centralizes on the idea of self-defense & disaster management, as reflected in the motto “Be Better”.

The main aim of this club is to propagate knowledge related to self-defense amongst the students and to train them physically as well as mentally to withstand and fight against a possibly dangerous situation, as well as develop the awareness needed to recognize such situations. The founder of this club is Tarun Sharma, a second-year student from BSc. Biotechnology (Honours), who came up with this idea and asked the department to help him with his project. The club is started under the guidance of Prof. Promila Malik, Head of the Biotechnology Department.

The primary trainer is the founder himself. He has trained and has an experience of 5 years, in mixed martial and tactical style fighting involving multiple styles such as Wing Chun, boxing, and Muay Thai. He talked about the need for self-defense in today’s time and how this format of student-student interaction was more effective and comfortable than the traditional method. The club has a unique grading system, starting with Iron (the beginner), with intermediate stages as one proceeds in the club, and the last stage is that of the Smith (Blacksmith). The chosen Smith will become the next successor and continue this club.

The seminar was brief. It started with a trailer, followed by a power-point presentation. The group’s activities will begin in the coming weeks, and more seminars are planned to be conducted to develop a strong mindset of the members. The physical practice sessions, which will include varying techniques of self-defense, are also to begin. It is the first club of its kind in the college. There will be no fee, whatsoever, for the club. To know more about the club, head over to their Instagram handle @blackironmma.

The review of the students after the interactive session was positive & many were eager to join the club.
