The 9th Software Freedom Day was organized by University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, on 15th-16th September, under the aegis of TEQIP-III. The students of PU Linux Users Group and Programming Club of UIET celebrate this event annually in association with its alumni to create awareness about the open source softwares and promote its use by the undergraduate and graduate students. This event is celebrated worldwide to promote FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).
The event started with the keynotes of Khushbu Parakh giving the basic idea of Open Source. It was followed by a talk by Sanyam Khurana about how to open up to open source. The partners of the event MSI also gave knowledge to the students about computer hardware and various components of a laptop that makes a laptop even better. There were also lighting talks by Akshay, Kriti and Anuja Madhaw on Block Chain, Coala Organisation and Aussi Foundelon. Speaking on the occasion Jigyasa Grover shared her experience and contributions to open source and her journey in Pharo Cousortium. Punit Chawla also explained about the basic fundamentals of UX/US designs to the students. Closing notes were given by Janu Verma about Image Processing and Machine Learning.
Prof. Savita Gupta, Director UIET, emphasized that such programs provide a platform to interact with alumni and other industry experts that help in learning upcoming technologies and making them industry ready. To meet these objectives, a joint effort to organize the meet was initiated by Prof. Krishan Kumar, Coordinator (IT), Prof. Harish Kumar, Coordinator (CSE) in association with Prof. Harmesh Kumar, Coordinator (Alumni cell) and Prof. Sukhwinder Singh (TEQIP – nodal officer). The technical event was attended by around 200 students from UIET and neighbouring institutes. Interactive sessions by UIET Alumni, Ashish Bansal from LeetCode, LSChhabra (CEO-Cyber Defence Intelligence) and Ashish Jangra from Ommzi solution were highly inspirational for the audience.
The convener of the programme, Ms. Mandeep Kaur, Asst Prof (IT) highlighted that technical event was graced by various open source contributors that include Abhay Prabhu from MSI, Khushbu Parakh from AVI networks, Sanyam Khurana and Jigyasa Grover, Punit Jindal, Janu Verma and Punit Chawla. In addition to these, the students of UIET also gave talks on Google Summer of Code, World outside whatsapp, BlockChain.
The event incorporated great knowledge to the students who participated in it and the efforts of the students of UIET must be appreciated for conducting an event of International level in Panjab University.
