Aaina Jeryal of PU Mirror brings the students of Chandigarh, Sahil Rehlan, 2014 CAT topper to tell you all you need to know about CAT and give you some last minute advice for the exam.

Q: Congratulations Sahil on completing one year at one of the most prestigious B- Schools ; Faculty Of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi in your CAT 2014 attempt . How has the year been so far?

Sahil: Thank you ! It’s been a great year . I have experienced a lot in one year at FMS , from the induction , to summer placements , college fests , final exams- it has been one crazy ride , and every bit was totally worth it .

Q: Was there any specific reason for choosing FMS over the most coveted IIM’s ?

Sahil: Oh yes, several factors indeed. First the ROI factor , the fees at FMS is relatively less compared to IIMs and also Delhi is near home . But the most important reason was that I wanted to do MBA in Marketing and FMS is the best college for it .

Q:CAT 2015 pattern has undergone significant changes , 3 sections instead of two , sectional time constraints etc. Would it need a change in strategy ?

Sahil: Oh yes definitely ,strategy will change and the CAT takers should go with their competencies .

Q: What was your strategy for CAT 2014 ?

Sahil: So I belong to an engineering background, hence maths was my forte . Undoubtedly , I targeted the quant section first , did 47 out of 50 questions and completed questions related to DI and LR . Last was the verbal section . I did the RC’s first and then a few           questions of grammar as the error rate in verbal is quite high .

Q: Do you think  the new pattern will put students primarily from engineering  backgrounds on a back foot and students from other streams in an advantageous position?

Sahil: I think it is more of a psychological factor . Any case it would be a matter of 10 marks here and there . It should not bother those who have been scoring good but it will have a good affect on those in the 85-90 percentile.

Q: Is there any minimum percentile  a candidate should aim to get in one of the IIM’s ?

Sahil: You know every IIM has a different selection process of its own . The old IIM’s – A,B,C,L will need  minimum 99 percentile , IIM-I,S,K will intake students upto 97 percentile and the for the new IIM’s 95 percentile would also do . Plus the sectional cut-offs are extremely important.

Q: CAT is supposed to be one of the toughest examinations to crack. What is your take on this ?

Sahil:  It is a bit difficult to say . I taught mathematics prior to taking the CAT exam , so for a person like me who has been in constant touch with mathematics and certain aspects of logical reasoning, it was not that tough . On the contrary for a person who has not been in touch with maths it is undoubtedly the most toughest exam for them .
