Re-United They Stand: NSUI and NSUI-SF

National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a student political party of Panjab University, Chandigarh was divided into two groups during the Student Council Elections of 2016. The reason of the division of NSUI was the ideological differences between  what later became NSUI and NSUI-SF (Student Front). These differences might have played a big role in NSUI losing the 2016 election. But this year brings good news for NSUI supporters as for this year’s elections, the two groups have united and the ideological differences between them seem to have been resolved.

This announcement was made on July 21st, 2017 at the Student Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh in the presence of Mr. Fairoz Khan, NSUI National President. With this move, NSUI aims to come to power in the Student Council Elections of 2017, after their victory of 2014.

What the Alliance Can Hold in its Wake?

While only time will tell to what level will this move turn out to be fruitful for NSUI, one thing that is for sure is that with this alliance, NSUI has taken a positive direction. History advocates that standing united always is of benefit in politics, both of colleges or of country. While they now have the then-split votes back together, this development might get them more support otherwise than last year. Another positive point for NSUI is that Congress, currently, is the ruling party in the state of Punjab. They being the student front of the Congress party, the policies of Captain Amarinder Singh and its feedback might also affect the voter behaviour in PU, partially if not completely, getting the votes in their favour.

What’s next?

This move of NSUI is nothing new in politics, even if its of PU. Making alliance has led many to winning elections and grabbing power, using it for the welfare or not being on the decisions taken post-victory. That is what makes the field of politics so dynamic and unpredictable. Friends turn into foes and foes turn into friends. But what is worth looking out for now is the strategies the other political parties will adopt in the face of such an alliance. Many parties will have to change their approach and employ new tactics.

This move will definitely make the student elections more interesting for the students in the University. The next month promises to be very exciting as there might be many new political developments following these lines. So brace yourself for the election fever in the University in the coming days.
