Raag and sitar set the mood in MCM DAV

The Music Department at MCM DAV College for women organised its annual edition of the Shri Jatinder Kumar Ji Memorial Function at the college multimedia hall on 29th January 2016.

It comprised of a seminar on the “Impact of Punjabi Classical Music on the Hindustani Classical Music” in the past decades, as punjabi music fades into the background with punjabi pop taking over the classical genre.

The musical afternoon began with a Vandana by the 2nd and 3rd year students of the music department, following which Dr Simmi R Singh briefed the audience with the theme for the day.

Mr Kamal Arora , the Chairperson of the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy was the chief guest while Mrs Neera Grover, from the music department, Punjab University was the Guest of Honor.

Mr. Alankar Singh, an eminent Punjabi classical vocalist and Gurbani Kirtankar (the first & only recipient of Sangeet Natak Academey’s Ustaad Bismillah Khan Puraskar for Gurbani Kirtan in 2010) addressed the audience and also enthralled them with his performance.

This was followed by an address and a beautiful sitar performance by Pandit Manu Kumar Seen, a celebrated sitar player as also the disciple of Ustaad Lacchman Singh Seen.

Thus concluded the musical afternoon, sending a serenading note of soulful music throughout the campus.
