In the light of the Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh (aka Dera Sacha Sauda) sexual abuse case, various parts of Haryana and Punjab have been put on high alert. Although the verdict of the case against the Dera chief will be pronounced by the CBI court on August 25, 2017, the authorities have started taking precautionary actions three days prior to the hearing. Security personnel have also been assigned around the Dera at Sirsa in Haryana.
The roads diving Sectors 1 & 2, and Sectors 1 & 6 at Panchkula and the five roads adjoining the District Court Complex will remain closed for the next two days. Since, the Dera chief has a large number of followers in Punjab and Haryana, the Governments of the states have sought central forces to deal with the situation if the verdict goes against the Dera chief. On Saturday, a large number of Dera chief’s followers descended in Panchkula and reached the district court complex.
Police personnel are also closely monitoring the social media for any enraging or, otherwise sensitive, content being spread. According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, “if social media creates law and order issues then the authorities may consider shutting internet services as well”, said Haryana DGP Baljeet Singh Sandhu.
In Chandigarh, the Cricket Stadium in Sector-16 is to be used as a ‘temporary jail’ on August 25, 2017 during the period of the hearing.
The DGP also said that efforts are being made to establish coordination with the followers of Dera chief through dialogue and appeals have also been made to Gurudwara Prabandhaks for assistance in maintenance of peace and order.
In Fatehabad District, prohibitory orders have been imposed under section 144 of CrPc, which will remain in place till August 31, 2017.
The sexual exploitation case was registered against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in 2002 by the CBI on the directions of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana. The court took this decision in the light of the circulation of anonymous letters alleging sexual exploitation of two Sadhvis by Dera Chief. The verdict of the case has the potential to create enormous upheavals should it go against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
