In a decision, Panjab University, Chandigarh decided to have a 12.5% hike in fees as a solution to its financial crisis. But what acted as a relief for the PU authorities gave a major setback to the students. Amidst all the hue and cry, the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) reacted positively by opposing the hike and advocating a total rollback for it. A meeting was held between PUCSC and the University authorities, as a consequence of which fees has been reduced in a few departments.
In IETVE the annual fees has been rolled back from 43000 to 32000, in Pharmacy from 50,000 to 25,000, in the Department of Laws from 25,000 to 20,000, and in BDS from 1.70 lakh to 1.30 lakh. Although the authorities have acquiesced to the aforementioned roll back, the PUCSC is still figuring out ways and means to have the fees in the above mentioned departments reduced more and for a total rollback for all the departments.
The authorities have also nodded to offering scholarships to students in consonance with the income slab of their parents. Scholarship of 75% will be offered to the ones whose income is less than 2.5 lakhs and 25% to those between the slab of 2.5 to 5 lakhs.
PUCSC has also suggested other means to generate revenue, like increasing the rent of the commercial showrooms in the campus and to charge higher rents from the guest house inmates. Also, PUCSC has proposed that at least 35 students be educated free of cost in UIET which will be in effect soon.
Despite all these steps, the Council is strictly against the fee hike and will keep working in that direction.
