According to sources, Panjab University is planning to regroup its small departments and make a proposal before the end of July-December 2017 semester so that it can be put up before the senate. It is being said that the authorities are planning to form the new admission handbook on the basis of the regrouping.
PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arun Kumar Grover said that regrouping should be in place before the commencement of the next semester and thus, should be approved before the senate meeting in March. This was discussed in a meeting of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university, where other issues like less number of smart classrooms, implementing the CBCS, introducing MOOCS and placements were also brought up. In the same meeting, the Vice Chancellor also gave the task of improving the demand ratio of the various courses in PU to the IQAC. Another recommendation regarding further enhancing the placement systems in the traditional departments was made. It is being said that this decision of regrouping was taken as PU needs to implement the NAAC recommendations. The VC also pointed out some of the pending directives of the previous NAAC evaluation, in the meeting.
Regarding the regrouping, NSUI member Nirjog Singh Mann said, “I think it’s a good step for combined development and infrastructural growth if the regrouping occurs. Funds can be allocated fairly without having a single department being ignored.”
Whether the regrouping of the small departments of PU will actually take place, is yet to be seen.
