Amidst the early morning PU fire blaze, when a portion of the Panjab University administrative building caught fire in the wee hours of Sunday, scores of manual records about pension, salary, exams, grants and budget got reduced to ashes. Taking advantage of the chaos, some students have resorted to create hoax about postponement of exams.
The below stated message was made viral on WhatsApp groups.
“This is an official announcement to all the students of Panjab University, including colleges affiliated with it that the remaining exams will not be taking place due to uncertain fire caused at administrative block last night. Most probably it will take place after the summer break. Thank you!”
However, there has been no such official statement by the Senate. Mr. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations went on record to nullify the WhatsApp message. In his statement to a leading daily, he said, “The ongoing PU semester exams will go on as per schedule. Some mischievous elements are spreading rumours of postponement due to fire. Students are requested to ignore the rumours and focus on their studies.”
The fire broke out on the first floor of Dewan Anand Kumar Hall on April 14, 2017 at around 3:00am. The Vice-Chancellor soon released the official statement, informing about the incident. He also said that an Enquiry Committee shall be constituted to access the cause of damage and its extent. The Salary Section, Examination and Payment Section and Budget Section have received a severe blow to its record, but the transactional data will be retrieved.
