On the occasion of National Science Day 2018, the Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, DAV College, organized various events over a course of 3 days (26th-28th February 2018).
National Science day is celebrated in India each year on February 28 to mark the discovery of Raman effect by Indian physicist, C.V. Raman. To commemorate this day, events like Poster Presentation, Powerpoint Presentation, Scientific Rangoli and Lectures by eminent scientists were organized. The theme of this year’s Science Day was “Science for the Development of Nation”.
The celebrations began with ‘Poster Presentation’ contest for students, on February 26. This competition was followed by a lecture session by ORBIT BIOTECH, Mohali which was all about enlightening the students on the summer training sessions and further scopes in the field of Biotechnology. On February 27, participant students presented their innovative PowerPoint presentations and were judged on the basis of their innovative ideas and confidence. Simultaneously, a Scientific Rangoli competition was held in which participants showed immense creativity and novelty. They had to showcase a scientific idea through a Rangoli using eco-friendly colors. They were judged by various professors of the Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
Finally, on February 28, it was time for a lavish function in the Mini Auditorium of the college. In the presence of more than a dozen faculty members from various science departments and more than 100 students, lectures by two distinguished scientists from IISER Mohali were held. The first seminar was by Dr. Purnananda Gupta Sharma, DEAN Research and professor at IISER Mohali. He talked about ‘Startups and Spin offs’, focusing on the need of alternative careers in the field of science. “It is time for young science students to leave the mainstream careers for something novel and innovative.” emphasized Dr. Purna in his entire 1-hour lecture.
After a short break, the second lecture commenced. This one was by yet another notable scientist, Dr. Nagraj Prasad, Associate Professor, Biological Sciences, also from IISER Mohali. His topic for the event was Sexual Conflict and Sexual Selection. He left the entire auditorium intrigued with his talk on Sexual conflict accompanied with experimental results on Drosophila melanogaster. Both the professors undertook a short interactive Q&A session with the students and did their best to clarify all kinds of doubts with reference to their topics.
“This was our 7th year of Science Day celebrations and I’m proud to say that this year was probably the best so far in terms of participation and support of students.” remarked Dr. Kakoli Biswas, HOD, Department of Biotech and Bioinformatics.
After the lectures, the most awaited prize distribution was held in which winners in all categories were felicitated with trophies and certificates. The event concluded with a superb Bhangra performance by girls that left everyone tapping their feet to the trendy Punjabi songs.
It was undoubtedly one of the most successful Science Day Celebrations held so far in DAV College that left a treasure of knowledge and erudition for both the young and old connected to science in some way or the other.
