The Scientific Society of DAV College, Chandigarh organized a National Conference cum Workshop from March 12-13. The theme of the conference was ‘Recent Advancements in Science and technology’ and it witnessed lectures and workshops by six notable scientists from nationwide.
Before the conference commenced, the speakers were welcomed by Dr. B.K. Vermani, Coordinator of the Scientific Society of DAVC. His welcome speech was followed by the launch of the Scientific Society official T-shirt. Finally, the conference began with the inaugural session on ‘Essentiality of a scientist’ by Dr. Prashanth Suravajhala, BISR, Jaipur.
“Following the 3 Cs- Consistency, Continuity and Credibility is absolutely essential for becoming a successful scientist”, said Dr. Prashanth.
Dr. Raghavendra Upadhyayula, also from BISR, Jaipur spoke on ‘Protein structure’. Both professors from BISR, also highlighted the facilities available in their institute and encouraged students to visit their labs and the campus. After Dr. Raghavendra’s talk, Mr. Harpreet Singh, HMMV, Jalandhar explained via practical session the ‘Visualisation of protein structure using PyMOL’. His was a Bioinformatics approach on proteins, their structure and interaction with other molecules.
Lunch was accompanied by a refreshing series of beatboxing, singing, and dancing by the members of Agaaz and other students of DAV College. Post-lunch, there was an interactive talk by Dr. Vipin Singh, expert in Genomics and Proteomics at CU, Mohali to bring to light ‘Next Generation Sequencing’. Without straying from his actual topic, Dr.Vipin also shared some valuable advice with the students regarding their future aspects.
Day 2 commenced with a brilliant talk by Dr. Thakur Sudesh Kumar Raunija from SCL-ISRO, Mohali who left the audience intrigued with the achievements of ISRO and various other facts related to Rocket Science. Dr. Samrat Ghosh from IISER Mohali graced the event with his presence as the Guest of Honour.
Dr.Thakur’s talk was followed by another interesting lecture by eminent scientist Dr.Yashveer Singh, IIT Ropar. In a very easy to understand manner, he presented his talk on the use of Hydrogels for Drug Delivery and Drug Administration. He also informed the students about the various Summer Internship Programmes and courses offered at IIT Ropar and encouraged them to be a part of it.
The much awaited lunch session witnessed a dynamic performance by DSW, the dance Crew of DAV College. The proficient members of this dance crew left the guests in awe with their dance moves. After lunch, it was time for the most interesting event of the day, a workshop on developing hydrogels and loading of drugs by Piyush Kumar, PhD student of Dr.Yashveer Singh, IIT Ropar. He demonstrated an outline of the work they are currently working at in their lab.
The workshop was like a cherry on top that enabled the young minds to comprehend the knowledge in the most convenient way. Dr.Raman Soni, Convener of Scientific Society thanked the speakers, the audience and the acknowledged the student members of the society for this incredible two day event. “The tremendous effort put in by the students is what made this conference such a huge success.” remarked, Dr.Raman Soni.
All the lectures were followed by interactive Q&A sessions which maintained the essence of the scientific aura. The conference brought together students and experts from different regions for a dialogue and exchange of thoughts on the best practices of a scientist.
