MCM celebrates its golden Jubilee with the Indian President


On February 28, 2018, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector-36, Chandigarh, hosted an astounding celebration on account of completing 50 Glorious years as a distinguished educational institution. The celebration witnessed the presence of some highly esteemed dignitaries which included Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the Honourable President of India as the chief guest, Shri V.P.  Singh Badnore, the Governor of Punjab and Administration of U.T. Chandigarh, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, the Governor of Haryana, Acharya Dev Vrat, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, and Smt. Kirron Kher, member of parliament, as the guests of honour. Dr Punam Suri, the President of DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, presided over the function. 

The students and alumni from the college who have brought laurels for the country in various national and international sports event were felicitated with a certificate of appreciation by the President. These students included alumnus Taniya Bhatia, a member of the Indian Women’s cricket team India series , Chahat Gupta, who has a National record in swimming and also won Bronze medal at the 9th Asian Age Group Swimming Competition held in Uzbekistan, Natasha Sandhu , gold medalist at the South Asian Roll Ball Championship in Nepal, Yamini Gupta, a player of martial arts who is also a Guinness book record holder , Palak Kaur Bijral, a rhythmic gymnastics player who was declared the best gymnast in the 2017-18 National level gymnastic Championship. Priya Paudyal and Aliya were honoured by Kaptan Singh Solanki for being the best cadet in Republic Day Parade 2016-17 and national integration camp 2017-18 respectively. 

Apart from felicitating the students, the honorable President also unveiled the foundation stone of the golden jubilee block at the college. This block, which will come up to a cost of Rs. 3.77 Crore, will have two components- a multipurpose hall and a new office block will also come up. A stamp in the name of Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan, the founder of the college, was also released. 

While addressing the audience, the President expressed his heartfelt happiness at being a part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the college.  He congratulated the Principal, the management, staff members and all students, present and passed out, on the success and brilliance of the institution. Talking about the pledge of organ donation, taken by the members gathered in the hall, the President said that a pledge of such sorts requires true conviction of the heart and a deep philanthropic dedication.

He further continued by pointing out how Chandigarh is an exemplar of ‘swachh Bharat’ and ‘swasth bharat’.  He congratulated the city, its people and the government of the U.T. on being the pioneer in the arena of recycling, taking Rock Garden as an example.  The President then emphasized the importance of women education and how one woman is responsible for educating at least two families.

According to him, any society is said to be developed in its true sense only when the women in the society are empowered and educated. He ended his speech with the hope that the college continues grow and excel as it has up until now.

“In the history of DAV Colleges, MCM DAV is the first to have had the privilege of hosting such high-profile dignitaries along with the President of India. It was truly momentous!”, said Akansha Tripathi, professor of Psychology at the College.
