Hundred needy students of PU will get scholarships


As many as one hundred Panjab University needy students would get scholarships as
the Philanthropic trust ‘Sarbat da Bhala (SDB) Charitable Trust’ today signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Managing Trustee, SDB Charitable Trust Mr S.P.S.Oberoi signed on behalf of SDB
Charitable Trust and PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover signed the MoU on behalf
of PU.
SDB Charitable Trust is a philanthropic body dedicated to the cause of extending
economic benefits to the underprivileged and hitherto neglected sections of the society.
Mr S.P.S. Oberoi is Chairman of Apex Group of Industries, Dubai. A philanthropist of
repute; Mr Oberoi has been working in diverse fields of charity and has been honoured
many times for his social work.

As per the agreement, the selected needy students in non-professional courses would get
full fee scholarships and the professional courses students would get 75% of the fee
from the trust. Students who are economically weak or are fatherless or affected by natural disaster or are differently able or recommended by a Managing Trustee of the Trust would be eligible for the scholarship. Rules have been framed for the purpose. Parents’ annual
income less than 5 Lac rupees, 50% marks in the qualifying examination and the mandatory class attendance conditions would be the minimum eligibility for applying to the

There will be a five-step procedure for the final selection of candidates for scholarship. The application by the candidate would be verified and recommended by the department Chairperson, which would be endorsed by the Dean of the concerned faculty. All the endorsed applications would be compiled by Dean Students Welfare. Thereafter, all the applications would be discussed and finalized by the committee comprising of three faculty Deans and Dean Students Welfare and members of SDB charitable trust headed by the Vice Chancellor. The list of candidates recommended by the committee would then be sent to the SDB Charitable Trust, University accounts office and Dean Students Welfare.

A candidate once selected for the scholarship would continue to avail it till the
completion of the degree provided he continues to fulfil the conditions and does not
fail in the examination. Mr S.P.S.Oberoi said that the grant of scholarship is a step in the direction where intelligent and hard working students are helped to pursue their higher education without any financial hardships.

Director Central Placement Cell, Prof Suresh K. Chaddha, Director Research Promotion
Cell, Prof O.P. Katare, Dean International Students Prof Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni, Prof
Anil Monga were also present on the occasion. Dr. Prabhleen Singh was also part of the
delegation SDB Charitable Trust. Associate Director, Central Placement Cell, Dr. Amandeep Singh Marwaha would be the Coordinator.
