Hospital on Wheels completes its silver jubilee!

Do you know about ‘The Lifeline Express’ or ‘Jeevan Rekha Express’? Well if not, let us tell you that it is the world’s first hospital train, run by a Mumbai based NGO, ‘the Impact India Foundation’ in collaboration with Indian Railways and Health Ministry.

Inaugurated on 16 July,1991 with 3 coaches, as of 2015, the service had completed almost 200 projects and had benefited over 600,000 rural Indians. Now that is a proud ‘Indian Moment’ for all of us!

But that is not all! The New Lifeline Express, given by the Indian Railways in 2007, has five coaches. The first coach is power car, which also consists of staff compartment and pantry area. The train has a main operating theatre with three operating tables, and a second self-contained operating theatre with two tables. Additionally, it has an ophthalmologic testing room, a dental unit, a laboratory, an X-ray unit and an auditorium with a large LCD display unit. That’s quite a complete hospital on its own.

The train in its 25 years of span has covered numerous parts of India like UP, Kerala, MP, West Bengal and Maharashtra. After all of it, it has surely became an inspiration to other countries like China, Central Africa and river boat hospitals in Bangladesh and Cambodia
