The most awaited declaration of the opening of B.Ed admissions has recently found home in the colleges of city beautiful and Punjab. And with the declaration, came a wave of excitement and confusion in equal measure; excitement because finally the coursework to get into the dream vocation of teaching opened up for many aspiring candidates and confusion because the process to apply, eligibility, selection procedure and all such details were still ambiguous.

Would there be entrance for admission to B.Ed Regular? Is it pursued in the campus of Panjab University or in its affiliated colleges? Is there any option for a correspondence in B.Ed? We follow up with all such queries of our readers and provide a detailed guide on B.Ed admissions in Chandigarh.

What all B.Ed courses are available in Chandigarh?

Panjab Univerity offers various options of B.Ed specialization to a candidate, to be pursued in the PU campus and alternatively in its affiliated colleges. Some of these courses can be studied at Panjab University campus only, some in its affiliated colleges and some in either.

Courses to be Pursued in Affiliated Colleges:

  • B.Ed General

  • B.Ed Yoga

  • B.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation)

Courses to be Pursued at PU Campus:

  • BA.BEd 5 Years Integrated Course (offered by Institute of Education Technology and Vocational Education)

  • B.Ed Special Education Learning Disability (offered by Department of Community Education and Disabilities Studies)

Courses to be Pursued at Either:

  • B.Ed Correspondence

  • B.P.Ed

How can I get into one of the B.Ed courses at PU Campus?

The two courses completely marked to be studied at PU campus i.e., BA.BEd Regular 5 Year Integrated Course and B.Ed (Special Education Learning Disability) are almost done with the admissions for session 2017-18. The entrances are conducted and there is no option to join these courses for semester first now, if the form was not filled before.

How can I get into B.Ed course in affiliated colleges?

B.Ed General, Yoga and Special Education are two year programs, spread over four semesters. A candidate has to complete the programme he/she opts for within three years of the date of start of the course, or else the course gets nullified.

Admission Process:

Admission to these courses are centralized i.e., conducted by Panjab University and studied in its affiliated colleges. There is no entrance exam and the candidate is given admission on the basis of merit calculated by considering the lower exam score.

In case a candidate had an additional subject in his/her lower degree, its marks is also taken into account while calculating the merit.

The steps to apply can be seen here in the infographic! After completing the application, a candidate has to wait for the merit list and attend the counseling, wherein a college will be allotted to him/her for admission as per the rank.

Eligibility Criteria:

A candidate willing to apply for B.Ed course must fulfill the criteria as given:

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree with at least 50% aggregate marks for general category and 45% for SC/ST/PwD category. (OR)

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering with specialization in mathematics or science with 55% aggregate marks for general category and 50% for SC/ST/PwD category.

Candidate with compartment in the lower examination will only be eligible if he/she clears the degree before the final counseling of B.Ed course.

Criteria of Allotment of Seats:

UT Pool (60%):

  • Schedule Caste: 15%

  • Schedule Tribe: NIL

  • Ex-Serviceman, Dependents of Defence/ Para-Military Personnel etc: 5%

  • PwD (Candidates whose disability is above 40%): 5%

  • Wards of Freedom Fighters: 2%

General Pool/ Outside UT (40%):

  • Schedule Caste: 15%

  • Schedule Tribes: 5%

  • Ex-Serviceman, Dependents of Defence/ Para-Military Personnel etc: 5%

  • PwD (Candidates whose disability is above 40%): 5%

  • Wards of Freedom Fighters: 2%

Moreover, 2% combined reservation for sports category and foreign students each is available.

  • Government College of Education, Sector 20D Chandigarh (100 seats)

  • Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36B Chandigarh (100 seats)

B.Ed Yoga:

  • Government College of Yoga Education and Health, Sector 23A Chandigarh (20 seats)

  • Brahmrishi Yoga Training Centre, Sector-19-A, Chandigarh (20 seats)

B.Ed (Special Education)

  • GRIID, Sector 31-C, Chandigarh (30 seats)

Subject-Choice:

Each candidate has to choose two teaching subjects, one major (should have been studied for 3 years in BA or 2 years in MA) and one minor (should have been studied for one year/semester of lower degree at least). A candidate can opt for his/her honours subject as major. The availability of subjects for B.Ed General in different colleges are as follow:

For B.Ed Yoga and B.Ed Special Education, candidates with any combination will be eligible to join.

How to get into B.Ed Correspondence?

B.Ed Correspondence is offered by University School of Open Learning (USOL), Panjab University. The admission for this course starts in August-September and the forms can be filled, when released, at usoladmissions.puchd.ac.in. The fee for the course goes to the range of INR 13,000-15,000 depending upon the choice of subject. The eligibility for the course is as given:

  • Candidates entering into teaching profession on the basis of Diploma/Certificate in teacher training with Bachelor’s/Master’s in humanities/science/commerce/social science with at least 50% aggregate marks (or) degree in engineering/technology with specialization in science and mathematics with at least 55% marks.

  • Candidates who have completed NCTE recognized teaching training programme through face-to-face mode with Bachelor’s/Master’s in humanities/science/commerce/social science with at least 50% aggregate marks (or) degree in engineering/technology with specialization in science and mathematics with at least 55% marks.

Relaxation of 5% in the minimum aggregate is awarded for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD.
