The two rival student union outfits, ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) and NSUI (National Students Union of India) got into a clash near the sector 27-28-29-30 junction in Chandigarh on July 17th, 2017. Some of the 9-10 members of ABVP amongst the attackers were identified as Parminder Singh Mand, Inder Saini, Gurjot Sidhu, and Jatinder. They allegedly attacked the NSUI members with sharp weapons and baseball bats.
As told by the victims, the three of them were on their way back from college when the attackers in SUVs (Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Fortuner), blocked their way and smashed the windowpanes and windscreen of their car.
Rohan, one of the members of NSUI present in the car alleged that the attackers even pointed a pistol at them. After the attack, the ABVP members fled with the keys of the car of the other group, resulting in a traffic jam for about 2 hours. The injured students were taken to the hospital.
Rajat, one of the injured, said, “The driver of the SUV, Harminder Singh of ABVP, pointed a pistol at us and asked us to come out of the car. As soon as we came out, 5-7 people came out of the car to attack us with swords, rods and bats.”
The ABVP members fled to Panchkula after the attack, where they lost control of the Toyota Fortuner which overturned outside the Gymkhana Club in Panchkula, though the students managed to flee. Search for the students was carried out by the police.
There had been previous clashes between the two groups recently, outside GGDSD College and in Sector 63 Mohali.
A complaint has been registered against the accused under section 147,148, 149, 323, 341, 506, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 25/54/59 of the Arms Act for attempt to murder. Raids are being carried out by the police to get hold of the accused.
