Celebrating Lohri PU style

On January 12, 2018 at noon, Lohri and Youth day celebrations were organised at the student’s centre in Panjab University by the Panjab University Campus Student Council in association with the legal authorities of UT Chandigarh Traffic Police and Narcotics Department.

The program initiated with a general awareness campaign by team of Social Entrepreneurs in which they talked about the importance of traffic rules with the help of a play. After the campaign, students from the crowd were called upon to showcase their talents. The program, then continued with the dance performances of Preeti from arts department and Meenakshi, followed by a Bhangra performance by the dance group of students from the University. The performance was full of zeal and energy,  so much that the crowd was compelled to move to the beats of music themselves.  After this,  Karan, a student at Panjab University, narrated few lines about PU after which the members of the student council joined the crowd.

Vani Sood, General Secretary, thanked all the students for coming and assured that more of such celebrations would take place in PU.

The Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, was invited to light the lohri fire and share a few words. He wished everyone Happy Lohri and thanked them for gathering and inviting him in the celebration. Then, he lighted the bonfire,  beautifully decorated at the center of the venue. And thus, began the celebration of Lohri with the ritual of reciting the lohri hymns.

Once the bonfire was lighted, the crowd tapped thier feet to the beats of music played by th DJ. The gala was soon joined by the team of 93.5 Big FM- RJ Anubhav, RJ Om and Chandigarh ke kadak launde Lakha and Rishi. As a part of audience interaction, they gave various interesting challenges for the audience to perform, and asked several questions like why Youth Day is celebrated. The winners were awarded with gift hampers and food vouchers.

The celebration reached it’s apex with the team of 93.5 Big FM,  joined the crowd in dancing. “This has by far been one of the best lohri celebrations organised in the University,” said one of the spectators attending the celebration. It was definitely a day well spent.
