Battle Between Snapchat And Indians, Snapdeal Becomes Victim

As the news broke out that Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel was not interested in expanding to ‘poor countries’ like India, many users chose to uninstall the app promptly. The CEO while discussing expansion plans in a meeting allegedly dismissed an employee’s concern of the slow growth rate of the app in India, stating that the app was only meant for ‘rich people’. “I don’t want to expand it into poor countries like India and Spain,” Mr Spiegel reportedly told Mr Pompliano. This lead to a heated argument between the users across the country.
Some users went to the extent of writing, “Poor India & Spain need better than Snapchat”, “Good bye, My Snapchat Account and Snap Inc. You’ll be product of gone by era and derision”, and “Poor Evan Spiegel”.
People began to uninstall the app and give it poor ratings and reviews on the App Store. However, not everyone seems to have received the memo that the outrage has to be directed towards Snapchat- for many are uninstalling the E-commerce website Snapdeal’s app instead!
Snapdeal definitely has nothing to do with Snapchat. Snapdeal feels that latest misunderstanding is just another event in a sustained period of misfortune of the company.
Adding to the humor after his comment on India, B-town celebs reacted on this issue on their social media handles. Several Bollywood personalities have been using this mobile app to share their fun videos on their social platforms. However, the recent controversy led many to stand up and voice their opinion on the same.
Urvashi Rautela tweeted “India is so rich that PM Narendra Modi had to implement demonetization to find out who is actually poor.”
“Obviously, Snapchat is for everyone! It is available worldwide to download for free. Those words were written by a disgruntled former employee. We are grateful for our Snapchat community in India and around the world,” says the CEO.
Snapchat had reportedly 4 million users in India in the year 2016. The number is expected to have grown since then.
However, the previous comments by Snapchat CEO has ultimately caused a negative impact on the Indian users.
