Baithak, an initiative taken by the former students of Panjab University, is an annual meeting of the PU alumni which was started in 2016. The main objective of the meeting is to bring the former students of the university under one roof and discuss the problems which they faced during their student life in the university.
Around 40 people attended the event which was held on August 6, 2017 and discussed their university days, the present scenario as well as how university can become a better place in the future. The event was held in the Youth Welfare Department near UILS, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Assistant Professor Sudhir Mehta, a teacher in the English department of the university and also a former student of the university, gave the introductory lecture. In the lecture, Professor Mehra stated that it was shameful that despite being a reputed institution, Panjab University authorities have to beg to the government in order to get funds to run the university smoothly. He stated that now is the time that the former students of the University give back to the institution which has played an important role in their progress in life and make the it a better place for the future and current students of the university.
The attendees also wanted a transparent system in the allocation of hostels so that a new student need not struggle in search of accommodation in a new city. The alumni also thought about placing a help desk in the university which can help the students to clear their doubts regarding the educational institution. The other thing they talked about was to make the education of the university affordable so that people from, all strata of the society can get a chance to study in this premier institute of India. They also talked about other aspects which can be improved in the university like the hostel mess and canteen etc.
Baithak is an informal platform for the former students of the university to give back to the university if they wish to. The students can reunite with their old friends and have a great time plus contribute to their alma-mater. Baithak is in its second year and with more publicity by the organisers, it strives to become a bigger event in the future. Its concept is here to stay.
