Barclays Premier League Week 4 Analysis

One month into the Barclays Premier League and game week 4 brings in a bag full of surprises. A not so good weekend  for the betting enthusiasts with the unpredictability in results causing few of the top teams to tumble down the table, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, suffering defeats and Arsenal barely managing a win with an own goal.

The Shockers game week 4,

Newcastle United vs Arsenal, was an entertaining fixture with Arsenal winning 1-0, the aggressive Newcastle striker Mitrovic got an early red card which reduced them to 10 men. At the start of the second half a shot from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got deflected by Coloccini and went in as an own goal which was the only difference between the two sides and secured Arsenal a 1 goal to nil win. This win gives arsenal 3points alright but given the star status of the gunners this is a cheap win one would say.

Analysis: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger though feels that his side is complete but Arsenal still need that prolific goal scoring striker who can be a force up front, the gunners had scored only three goals in the four games so far and two of them had been own goal with just one goal scored by an Arsenal player. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott have not really been the netbusters for the gunners so far. With the transfer window coming to a close on 1st September Wenger needs to spend some money and buy a goal scorer.

Liverpool vs West Ham United, another entertaining fixture was Liverpool v/s West Ham United as Liverpool were humbled by West Ham as the visitors outplayed them at every stage with the reds losing 3-0 at home. With the likes of Coutinho, Milner, Benteke in the starting eleven and the buzzing, energetic crowd at the field one would assume Liverpool to end on top but West Ham clinched the win with a convincing 3 goal margin, leaving Brendan Rogers and the reds grim faced.

Analysis: Liverpool were defeated because of the complacency that was visible in their playing style, with the center back  Dejan Lovren trying to tackle his way through the West Ham forwardLanzini in his own halffailing to do that and conceding a goal. Liverpool granted two easy early goals to the visitors and it is not easy to comeback from a 2-0 down score, second half saw an early red card to Coutinho making it even harder for the reds. The striker Benteke had not found a fluidic chemistry with the Liverpool style of play, scoring just the one controversial goal(off side) and needs to find his feet soon, saying that the reds shall not and will not be affected much by this defeat and you could see them coming all guns blazing in their next fixture.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace, there could not have been a worse start to this season for Chelsea as they have failed to book a place in the top half of the table after a month into the premier league, with the blues acquiring the 13th spot. They displayed a disappointing performance at their home Stanford Bridge losing to Crystal Palace 2-1, the only positive for Chelsea would be that the dry run of their newly bought striker finally finished as Falcao scored a header to equalize in the 79th minute only to concede the lead to Palaceagaintwo minutes later, as Joel Ward scored a stunning team goal in the 81st minute.

Analysis: Chelsea has not found the rhythm that it was in, in the last season. The defense has been weak with Ivanovic looking out of touch and Terry being seen more in the referee books than on the pitch with a red card to his name making him warm the bench. The midfield was also not looking the same with Fabregas their go to middle man not looking like the same player he was the last season who had this niche to create chances for his forwards, Fabregas made 18 assists the most made by any player last season but has failed to create even a single assist this season. The strikers alone cannot protrude Chelsea to a win this season; Jose Mourinho needs to fix these loopholes if he wants Chelsea to be a serious title contender this time around.

Swansea City vs Manchester United, united fans were not very amused as Louis Van Gaal’s multimillion dollar Manchester United was defeated by Swansea City, 2-1, and Garry Monk emerging as the only manager to beat Manchester United in their first three meetings including the two defeats last season. He’d rather fancy facing Manchester United all through the premier league as he has a 100% win percentage against the red devils. Though united opened the scoring in this week’s game with Juan Mata putting the ball into the netting, Swansea looked unfazed and determined managing to pull a magnificent 2-1 win with Ayew and Gomis scoring a goal each, all three goals coming in the second half.

Analysis: Wayne Rooney the united striker has been on a goal-less streak for the last ten premier league matches failing to score a single goal which is the longest ever since he joined Manchester United in the year 2004, with the striker not being among the goals he becomes more of a burden up front, that being said he scored a hat trick in the champions league qualifiers last week when he was provided with some exceptional balls by the midfield showing some hope for the forward. The other problematic area in the united eleven was Luke Shaw’s performance as the left back. He is more of an offensive player and he does make those brilliant runs forward when needed but he leaves the defense wide open with the center back Blind to do the work on the left defensive flank, both the goals in the game against Swansea were scored off the left flank of Manchester United as Shaw could not get back and defend in time.
