5 Eternal Gems 66th PU Convocation Paid Ode To


The 66th Convocation of Panjab University which took place on March 25th, 2017 awarded degrees to over 800 students. The honourable Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari graced the occasion with his presence and said, “Intellectual dissent has the power to clarify differences and elucidate competing assumptions. It enables each of us to recognize the strengths and weaknesses in our thinking.”

Here’s presenting five eternal learning gems of Panjab University who were paid an ode during the convocation ceremony. These people have contributed indiscriminately towards the positive transformation of society, and persist to be a source of inspiration for people across the globe.

1. Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana:

dalipThe voice of Punjabi literature, Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana is a foremost novelist and a short-story writer. She has won various regional and national awards for her immense contribution towards contemporary Punjabi literature. She was the first woman in the region who earned a doctorate degree in 1963.

2. Anupam Kher:

anupam-kherAn Indian actor who has appeared in over 500 films and plays, Anupam Kher has been seen excelling in cinema and art since long. He has been honored with the Padma Shri award and Padma Bhushan award for his indispensable contribution in the field of cinema and arts. He was given the Panjab University Kala Ratan Award at the convocation ceremony by Vice-President, Hamid Ansari.

3. Nuruddin Farah:

nuruddinA prominent Somali novelist, essayist and professor, Nuruddin Farah has garnered acclaim as one of the greatest contemporary writers in the world. He pursued a degree in philosophy, sociology and literature from 1966 to 1970. He has lived and taught in England, South Africa, Sweden, Uganda, Germany, United States, Nigeria, Sudan and Italy.

4. Murli Manohar Joshi:

murli-manoharAn Indian politician, a distinguished statesman and an academician, Murli Manohar Joshi has made significant contribution in the fields of Philosophy, culture and literature. He was recently awarded second highest civilian award of the Republic of India, the Padma Vibhushan award.

5. Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush:

gurdev-singhAn agronomist and geneticist, Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush has been working persistently towards accentuating the global supply of rice and has been acclaimed as a provider of food security across the globe. He graduated from Punjab Agricultural University and further pursued his doctorate degree in Genetics from University of California. His immense contribution towards the society is clearly evident by the fact that, he has created more than 300 high-yielding varieties of rice.

Needless to say, it is due to the persevering and dedicated contribution of these gems that today Panjab University stands as a distinct entity. With this, we would like to congratulate all those who received their degrees in the 66th Convocation ceremony of Panjab University!
